Overview
General practice needs strong, credible leaders who understand the system, can navigate complexity, and are confident speaking up for the profession, locally and nationally. The LMC Leadership Programme has been designed to help build exactly that.
This programme supports GPs who want to step into leadership and representative roles with confidence, clarity, and purpose. Whether you are curious about medico-politics, considering future committee or board roles, or simply want a better understanding of how decisions affecting general practice are made, this programme provides the knowledge, skills, and space to grow.
Through a blend of expert-led sessions, practical learning, and peer-based Action Learning Sets, participants develop a deeper understanding of the LMC, its statutory role, and the wider NHS system. The programme also explores what it means to lead with credibility, influence, and confidence, particularly in complex, pressurised environments.
Just as importantly, the programme creates a supportive environment to reflect, challenge assumptions, and learn alongside a small cohort of peers facing similar pressures and ambitions.
It is about more than understanding how the system works; it is about building the confidence to operate within it, represent colleagues effectively, and help shape the future of general practice.

Programme frequency
The LMC Leadership Programme runs annually.
It is delivered through six modules, run monthly on a consecutive basis. Each module builds on the last, allowing participants to develop their knowledge, confidence, and leadership capability over time.
Following the core modules, participants are offered the opportunity to form an Action Learning Set to support continued reflection, peer learning, and development in practice. Where this option is taken up, the programme will run for a total of 12 months.
Expressions of Interest are typically invited in early March, with the programme commencing in April. Exact dates, session formats, and time commitments are confirmed as part of the Expressions of Interest process.
How to register interest
Places on the LMC Leadership Programme are allocated via an Expressions of Interest (EOI) process rather than through the Service Enquiry Form.
When dates are confirmed and the EOI window opens, the programme will be listed on our Events page, where you’ll find full details of the programme and a link to the Expression of Interest form.
Expressions of Interest typically close on a Friday, with selected participants notified the following week. Please note that submitting an Expression of Interest does not guarantee a place on the programme. Demand often exceeds available places, and selection is based on the information provided to ensure a balanced and effective cohort.
All applicants will be informed of the outcome once the selection process has concluded.
