What the LMC Committee does
The LMC is the statutory representative for General Practice in Devon.
The LMC Committee plays a central role within this structure, acting as the primary elected body through which representation, oversight, and direction are exercised.
Working on behalf of member practices, the Committee:
- Supports the LMC in representing the views and interests of General Practice locally and nationally
- Works closely with the LMC Executive to inform and support the formal negotiations process
- Amplifies the voice of General Practice by ensuring the LMC remains informed of the issues affecting the practices it represents.
The Committee works as a fully integrated extension of the LMC Executive Team, with the Executive providing the support needed to enable the Committee to carry out its role effectively.
How representation works
The Committee is made up of 12 elected members, drawn from across General Practice in Devon.
Each Committee member acts as a representative link between their allocated practices and the LMC, helping to:
- Surface issues, challenges, and opportunities from the frontline
- Share intelligence and feedback from LMC discussions
- Strengthen two-way communication between practices and the LMC.
To support this, practices have been asked to nominate Practice Points of Contact, ensuring a clear and direct route for engagement with elected representatives.
Engagement, accountability and connection
This Committee model is built around active engagement.
The newly established LMC Committee plays a central role in strengthening the golden thread, maintaining a clear direct line of communication from the consulting room, through the LMC, into wider system and policy-making arenas.
The Committee of twelve actively engages with the practices they represent. Elected members are provided with dedicated engagement time, enabling them to listen to concerns, gather insight, and raise issues impacting patient care or practice operations.
This structured engagement ensures that intelligence from practices is:
- Reviewed promptly
- Escalated where needed
- Acted upon by the LMC Executive
- Responded to clearly and consistently.
Alongside this direct engagement, insight and updates will be shared through The Committee Journal, providing transparency on priorities, themes, and issues raised through the Committee. This will sit alongside our wider member communications, supporting a clear, and responsive flow of information and feedback between practices and the LMC.
