Overview

The Future Leaders in General Practice Programme is designed to support individuals who are beginning to explore leadership roles within General Practice or who wish to develop the confidence, skills, and self-awareness needed to lead well in the future.

Leadership in General Practice takes many forms – clinical, managerial, educational, and system facing. This programme provides protected space to step back from day-to-day pressures, reflect on leadership practice, and develop the foundations required to lead teams, influence change, and work sustainably in complex environments.

The programme brings together peers from across General Practice to learn, share experiences, and grow together in a supportive and values-led setting.

This programme is suited to individuals working in General Practice in Devon who:

  • Are interested in developing their leadership capability
  • Are beginning to take on leadership responsibilities or aspiring to do so
  • Want to better understand themselves as leaders and how they work with others
  • Are seeking space to reflect, learn, and build confidence alongside peers

The Future Leaders in General Practice Programme combines practical leadership development with a strong focus on wellbeing, communication, and self-awareness.

Module Overview 

The programme is delivered through six inter-connected modules, designed to build leadership confidence, resilience, and effectiveness over time. Flexible and accessible, the programme allows participants to attend individual modules or complete the full series, depending on their interests and development goals.

What is wellbeing and why it matters at work (PERMAH)

An introduction to workplace wellbeing and its impact on individual and team performance. This module explores the PERMAH model — Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Achievement, and Health — providing a practical framework to support holistic wellbeing in the workplace.
Benefits: Improved engagement, reduced burnout, and enhanced morale.

Challenging conversations and how to have them

Develop the skills and confidence needed to manage difficult conversations effectively. This module focuses on constructive feedback, understanding the difference between being nice and being kind, and fostering open, honest communication.

Strengths-based leadership

Explore your own strengths and those of others, and learn how to use them to enhance performance, collaboration, and confidence.

Managing your energy, not your time

Shift the focus from time management to energy management. This module explores thriving at work, recognising burnout, identifying personal triggers, and developing strategies to sustain energy during periods of pressure.

Positive leadership

Examine the principles of positive leadership, including growth mindset, leading by example, and building cultures of trust and psychological safety.

Bringing it all together: creating a resilient and high-performing team

This final module draws together learning from across the programme, supporting participants to integrate wellbeing, strengths, energy management, and leadership into everyday practice within General Practice.

Session frequency

The Future Leaders in General Practice Programme is run annually, with sessions spread throughout the year.

Once dates have been finalised, sessions are published on our Events page, where you can view upcoming dates and access booking information.

Places are limited, and demand is high.

To register your interest, please visit our Events and Learning page and select the Future Leaders in General Practice Programme session you would like to attend. You will then be directed to complete our Service Enquiry Form.

When completing the form, please select “Future Leaders in General Practice” from the list of available support services to ensure your booking is processed correctly.

We aim to close registrations once a session is full. If you register after your chosen date has reached capacity, you will be notified and placed on a waiting list for future dates.
