Nursing in General Practice
The overall remit of Devon LMC is to serve and represent GPs within the Devon system. However, the General Practice Nurse profession is suffering from an all-time low in support. Devon LMC recognises the vital role General Practice Nurses and Advanced Nursing Practitioners play in any practice team. Therefore we have been working hard to ensure we fill this void, we have recently appointed a designated Medical Secretary Nurse role to our Executive Team in order to provide bespoke leadership and professional support to nursing within General Practice in Devon.
We are also exploring other avenues in which Devon LMC can support the nursing workforce in General Practice with the creation of a designated internal hub portal for nurses which is coming soon. Devon LMC has also brought together Devon's first LMC Primary Care Advanced Practice Network.

Steve Blakeway - Advanced Nurse Practitioner - Leatside Surgery

When we think of Devon we no doubt consider a slower life with holiday makers, cream teas and thatched rooftops and whilst this is a reality there is also a vibrant, dynamic and joined up healthcare workforce; from cutting edge technology to leading the way in collaborative PCNs and integrated working with Secondary Care. I have been working in Devon with progressive nursing teams most of my professional life from whom I have learnt a great deal. Torbay hospital provided a springboard for my career by sponsoring me (as a Healthcare Assistant) to carry out my Nursing Degree over 16 years ago. I have since ‘repaid’ the system by working in Acute Hospital environments and now carving a career in Primary Care, as a qualified Advanced Practitioner.

Devon is a fantastic place to bring up a family and provide a springboard for a wonderful work - life balance; from the ruggedness of Dartmoor to some of the worlds best beaches, my kids are rarely indoors. As an Advanced Practitioner I feel fully supported and valued by Primary and Secondary Care collegues to develop and flourish here. The LMC is also now supporting a Devonwide network of Advanced Pracitioners to come together to provide assistance, support and teaching whilst networking with national teams and organisations to continue to keep Devon’s Advanced Practitioners wholley up to date, progressive and relevant.
